  Awake, and sing the song Of Moses and the Lamb; Wake, every heart and every tongue, To praise the Savior’s Name. Sing of His dying love; Sing of His rising power; Sing how He intercedes above For those whose sins He bore. Sing on your heavenly way, Ye ransomed sinners, sing; Sing on, rejoicing every day In Christ, the eternal King. Soon shall we hear Him say, “Ye blessèd children, come!” Soon will He call us hence away, To our eternal home.   The gathering clouds, with aspect dark, A rising storm presage; O! to be hid within the ark, And sheltered from its rage! See the commissioned angel frown! That vial in his hand, Filled with fierce wrath, is pouring down Upon our guilty land! Ye saints, unite in wrestling prayer; If yet there may be hope; Who knows but Mercy yet may spare, And bid the angel stop! Already is the plague begun, And fired with hostile rage; Brethren, by blood and interest one, With brethren now engage. Peace spreads her wings, prepared for flight, And war, with flaming sword, And hasty strides draws nigh, to fight The battles of the Lord. The first alarm, alas, how few, While distant, seem to hear! But they will hear, and tremble too, When God shall send it near. So thunder, o’er the distant hills, Gives but a murm’ring sound, But as the tempest spreads, it fills, And makes the welkin sound. May we, at least, with one consent, Fall low before the throne With tears the nation’s sins lament, The churches, and our own.   Blessèd feasts of blessèd martyrs, Saintly days of saintly men, With affection’s recollections Greet we your return again. Mighty deeds they wrought, and wonders, While a frame of flesh they bore; We, with meetest praise and sweetest, Honor them forevermore. Faith unblenching, hope unquenching, Well-loved Lord, and single heart, Thus they, glorious and victorious, Bravely bore the martyr’s part. Blood in slaughter poured like water, Torments long and heavy chain, Flame, and axe, and laceration, They endured, and conquered pain. While they passed through divers tortures, Till they sank by death opprest, Earth’s rejected were elected, To have portion with the blest. By contempt of worldly pleasures, And by mighty battle done; Have they merited with angels, To be knit for ay in one. But flowers need nights cool darkness, the moonlight and the dew; So Christ, from one who loved it, His shining oft withdrew: And then, for cause of absence my troubled soul I scanned But glory shadeless shineth in Immanuel’s land. The little birds of Anwoth, I used to count them blessed, Now, beside happier altars I go to build my nest: Over these there broods no silence, no graves around them stand, For glory, deathless, dwelleth in Immanuel’s land. O I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved’s mine! He brings a poor vile sinner into His “house of wine.” I stand upon His merit—I know no other stand, Not even where glory dwelleth in Immanuel’s land. I shall sleep sound in Jesus, filled with His likeness rise, To love and to adore Him, to see Him with these eyes: ’Tween me and resurrection but Paradise doth stand; Then—then for glory dwelling in Immanuel’s land. The Bride eyes not her garment, but her dear Bridegroom’s face; I will not gaze at glory but on my King of grace. Not at the crown He giveth but on His pierced hand; The Lamb is all the glory of Immanuel’s land. I have borne scorn and hatred, I have borne wrong and shame, Earth’s proud ones have reproached me for Christ’s thrice blessed Name: Where God His seal set fairest they’ve stamped the foulest brand, But judgment shines like noonday in Immanuel’s land.   Here, O my Lord, I see Thee face to face; Here would I touch and handle things unseen; Here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace, And all my weariness upon Thee lean. This is the hour of banquet and of song; This is the heavenly table spread for me; Here let me feast, and feasting, still prolong The hallowed hour of fellowship with Thee. Here would I feed upon the bread of God, Here drink with Thee the royal wine of Heaven; Here would I lay aside each earthly load, Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven. I have no help but Thine; nor do I need Another arm save Thine to lean upon; It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; My strength is in Thy might, Thy might alone. I have no wisdom save in Him Who is My Wisdom and my Teacher both in One; No wisdom can I lack while Thou art wise; No teaching do I crave save Thine alone. Mine is the sin, but Thine the righteousness: Mine is the guilt, but Thine the cleansing blood; Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace; Thy Blood, Thy righteousness, O Lord my God! Too soon we rise; the symbols disappear; The feast, though not the love, is past and gone. The bread and wine remove; but Thou art here, Nearer than ever, still my Shield and Sun.   Life and strength of all Thy servants, Brightness of the Father’s light; Men with angels, earth with Heaven, In Thy praise their songs unite. Thousand thousand warrior princes In Thine angel army stand; Flames the victor Cross before them, Grasped in Michael’s dauntless hand. Hurling back from Heav’n the rebels With the lifting of his sword, In the might of God he tramples On the dragon’s head abhorred.
